Travel
Travel is essential to my creative process and an important part of my life.
I didn’t really travel much as a child, at least not to exotic destinations. My first trip was to Mexico when I was 26. Everything was new and different – the colours, the smells, the people – and I fell in love not only with the country but with the feeling itself. I came back with a head full of colours.
Naturally, my expeditions made their way into my work. The first pieces I drew were inspired by the feeling of travelling itself – idealised and imaginary representations of the places I had visited. Living in London also had a lot to do with my urge to draw sunny and exotic settings. It was a way to escape reality for a day.
What fascinates me the most when discovering a new place is understanding its light. It somehow shapes your surroundings, the colours you are seeing, the taste of the food you are eating and the mood of the people you are meeting. Light is what makes a location unique, so when it comes to translating it into an image, I use it as the starting point, trying to extract a palette that conveys the feeling of the place.
